How to check income tax refund status

If you have filed your income tax returns with a refund request, here is a step by step guide for you to track the refund status due to you.

If You have paid a higher tax to the Government in the previous financial year i.e 2018-2019 then you are required to file Income Tax Return to claim the refund amount. Higher tax is usually Paid when during the financial year the advance tax paid by an individual, TDS is more than their tax liability.

If the tax determines after processing your ITR that the refund is Payable to you and Intimation is sent you In your Mail account or SMS. An intimation is sent to you U/S 143(1) of the income tax department.

Do make sure that you have filled in the correct bank account details while filing your ITR as the refund will be credited to this account.
However, from this year onwards, the tax department will only issue e-refunds to those bank accounts where PAN is linked and is pre-validated on the e-filing website.

Ways to track the status of income tax refund

  • A) On the e-filing website- Steps-
  • Visit Website - www.incometaxindiaefilling.gov.in
  • Log In To Your Account
  • Click On View And returns of your Forms
  • Select Income Tax Return, Then Choose the Assessment Year for which you want to check the Income Tax Refund Status
  • Click on your acknowledgment number, which is a hyperlink.
  • A pop-up will appear on your screen that will show the timeline of filing of returns such as when your ITR was filed and verified, date of completion of processing, date of issue of refund, etc. 

  • B) On the TIN NSDL website-

This is how you can check the status of your income tax refund here:
  • Visit the website: https://tin.tin.nsdl.com/oltas/refundstatuslogin.html
  • Enter your PAN details
  • Select the relevant assessment year for which you want to check the refund status.
  • Enter the captcha code and click on submit. Depending on the status of your refund, a message will be displayed on your screen.

Finance Minister extends deadline for GST returns to June 30 from March 31 The FM made these announcements during her address to the media on measures to tackle the economic impact of coronavirus the last date for filing  GST  returns for March, April and May has been extended to June 30. The deadline for composition returns on GST has been also been extended to June 30, 2020. companies with less than Rs 5 crore turnover won't be charged interest or penalty for the late filing of GST. Bigger companies will have have to pay the interest amount at 9 percent for delayed filing of GST, but no late fee or penalty will be levied. The last date for opting for the compensation scheme has been extended to June 30, 2020.
